1831: william miller begins preaching christ's return in the fall of 1843.. 1842: miller and followers begin publishing a journal, the midnight cry.. 1843, late: miller and followers disappointed; fix christ's return in the spring of 1844.. 1844, spring: miller and followers disappointed; fix christ's return on october 22, 1844.. 1844, late: miller and followers anticipate disappointment.. 1844, october 21: miller says: "i told some of my brethren christ would not come on the morrow" because the second coming would be "in an hour they think not".
1980: The Society admits to having had some share in the disappointment.
Could someone comment on how this was done? By what means did the Society do this? Was it by means of word of mouth, or was it in a publication? Exactly how was it worded?
Dear Pallbearer,
Here is one place:
Watchtower 1980 3/15 Choosing the Best Way of Life -

In modern times such eagerness, commendable in itself, has led to attempts at setting dates for the desired liberation from the suffering and troubles that are the lot of persons throughout the earth. With the appearance of the book LifeEverlasting—inFreedomoftheSonsofGod, and its comments as to how appropriate it would be for the millennial reign of Christ to parallel the seventh millennium of man’s existence, considerable expectation was aroused regarding the year 1975. There were statements made then, and thereafter, stressing that this was only a possibility. Unfortunately, however, along with such cautionary information, there were other statements published that implied that such realization of hopes by that year was more of a probability than a mere possibility. It is to be regretted that these latter statements apparently overshadowed the cautionary ones and contributed to a buildup of the expectation already initiated.6
In its issue of July 15, 1976, TheWatchtower, commenting on the inadvisability of setting our sights on a certain date, stated: "If anyone has been disappointed through not following this line of thought, he should now concentrate on adjusting his viewpoint, seeing that it was not the word of God that failed or deceived him and brought disappointment, but that his own understanding was based on wrong premises." In saying "anyone," TheWatchtower included all disappointed ones of Jehovah’s Witnesses, hence including personshavingtodowiththepublicationoftheinformation that contributed to the buildup of hopes centered on that date.thank you alan feuerbacher!!http://corior.blogspot.com/2006/02/some-prophetic-speculations.html.

Dear bcapp,
I would say that they need to look at all the markings of a cult, as there are definate features, and go through them one by one and see if they fit the bill or not. I have done this, and HOLY cow, out of a list of 15-20 markings, there were only a couple that were questionable if they fit or not. 13-18 that did fit??!! Well that was 13-18 too many for me. You can't excuse all those away just because a couple might not apply. What about all those that do?? That is my thought on the matter.

Lady Liberty
